The app: local processing

It’s Been a While runs on your Mac. It keeps its own database of your chats there, under ~/Library/Application Support/ChatCopilot/. Drafts are written by Apple Intelligence on your Mac. We run no server and the app has no account.

The app: connection to WhatsApp

To receive your WhatsApp messages, the app connects directly from your Mac to WhatsApp’s servers (Meta) as a linked device. WhatsApp processes your data as it always does; see its privacy policy. Nothing goes through us.

The app never sends read receipts, typing indicators or online status. Like every linked device, it does confirm delivery. It is not an official WhatsApp client. WhatsApp can log out linked devices or restrict accounts that use unofficial clients, and the risk can’t be ruled out. The app only sends a message if you ask it to.

The app: iMessage and Contacts

iMessage and SMS are read from the Messages database on your Mac, read-only. Contact names come from your address book. Both stay on your Mac.

The app: macOS permissions

The app: no telemetry

The app has no analytics, tracking or crash reporting.

The app: logs

Logs stay on your Mac in ~/Library/Logs/ChatCopilot/. They contain IDs and counts only, no message content and no phone numbers.

The app: reporting a problem

In Settings › About, “Report a problem…” opens your mail app with a diagnostic report. It contains states, counts and settings, no names, numbers or message content. You can read and edit it first. Nothing is sent unless you send the e-mail yourself. This is the only way data from the app can reach the developer.

The app: licenses

The app uses open source components. See Licenses.

Your rights

You have the right to access, rectify, erase and restrict the processing of your data, to object to processing, and to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority.
